Our official MyAnimeList app will no longer be supported on iOS 12 devices beginning March 2022. This means that if updates made to the app after March 1, 2022 break functionality or introduce bugs on iOS 12 versions only (not 13+), our development team will not be fixing them. We encourage all iOS users to update their devices to iOS 13 before this date, if possible.

We apologize to our members who are unable to upgrade to iOS 13 due to unsupported devices or other issues. Unfortunately, this was a necessary decision so that we can focus on improving our app functionality and experience for all members.

Blast!

Now I................................will continue my regular schedule of accessing MAL via my laptop computer, continue not owning a smartphone of any form and never having owned one, and sit back contentedly always glad when I come across news like this that I don't have to be bogged down in the hassle of it all.

Some people probably don’t have the web browser app on their phones (restrictions.
)

But yeah, you could just boot up a PC. And use the site

Lol dude, the iPhone 6 support is the only thing being killed off here. That came out in 2014. iPhone 6S and higher support up to iOS15 currently, which is the latest version.

Didnt knew you can use mobile app for MAL now.... very poggers tbf

anyway, I'm guessing that IOS 12 can be updated to IOS 13 anyway so ig that's a good thing, especially to those ppl that has IOS 12 and are stalling the update.

A PWA app would be so much better honestly.

Or, you know, view the site in this marvelous invention known as a "browser". I've never understood why people feel the need to use an "app" for a website; that's what browsers are for and phones all have them.

I've been using the "Add to homescreen" option through Chrome app on my Color 3.2 OS Oppo phone (based on Nougat 7.1.1) since 2020 cause the app isn't available for me.
It works for me but, I mainly only keep track of my anime lists so, not sure if it'll work for everyone.

I've actually found it useful since I always get logged out of MAL on the mobile browser. I never remember my password since MAL gives me a long phrase of gibberish. The app keeps me logged in and logs me into the browser so I'd rather use that than search through my Gmail and copy-paste whatever my password is.

I don't even have an iPhone, but I still want to know just one thing: How, exactly, does this help the team "focus on improving our app functionality and experience for all members"?

Like... genuinely, I don't get the thought behind this. If it were anything else, I'd understand; I'm a PC builder who has seen plenty of products (especially GPUs, RIP GeForce 700 series) get discontinued to focus on compatibility with newer hardware, so it's not as if I don't understand that old tech has to be discontinued eventually. However, I don't see how a mobile app as bare bones as the MAL app would need to be discontinued on an older OS version, especially considering that iOS 12 only came out in 2018 and isn't even that old, unless you guys are planning to make some huge changes that would warrant such a thing.

Mobile SDKs change fairly quickly. You're limited by the oldest version you support, and maintaining feature parity & code correctness across every version becomes harder the more versions you need to support. In addition, if you rely on third-party packages, you'll eventually be forced to stay on an outdated version (which in turn might not support newer versions of iOS) once the maintainers drop support for older OS versions.

Basically, supporting old iOS versions is a lot of work for a very small segment of users (93% are on iOS 14+ currently). Only supporting the last 2-3 major versions is a normal and reasonable practice from a developer standpoint. By freeing up developer resources spent on maintaining support for old devices, you can spend those resources on adding actual features instead.

Unfortunately, on iOS, PWAs don't work as perfect as on Android devices (out of the box). So if an app is targeting iOS, native apps still are a better option.

It is a minor thing, but on iOS the option to “Add to Home Screen” is almost hidden under the share menu. You need 4 taps to do that, and for Android a pop up shows up, so it is easier for the user. Also a few glitches and white screens are common when opening the app from the Home Screen, there’s a work-around to improve experience, but as I said, it is not as smooth as on android, out of the box.

To be able to use MAL as an app is a poor excuse to buy a new phone. People considering this should reconsider their priorities.
